“I see you in colors that don’t exist.”

“My life was wonderful. I was very active, I liked to go out, I was working. Then 24 years ago I had a car accident. When I woke up, I was in the hospital, and I was paralyzed from the waist down. I was so upset. I was thinking, There’s no more life for me; I can’t take it. I tried to commit suicide. They told the nurse and the psychologists came to see me. That worked. I felt like I cooled down. I thought, I need to take a break and see where I’m going. And I got better.”
“How long did you stay in the hospital?”
“Several months. Then I had rehab for two or three years. I got better, and I started to go out and started to work again.  I was feeling good. And then we had a reunion with my old college classmates. Everyone was talking, talking, and it was all family problems and fights. When they turned to me, I said, ‘I have no problems at all. And you’re all normal people, and I’m in a wheelchair. I’m still happy. ‘ And everybody got quiet, and they started crying and said, ‘Steven, you’re so brave!’ I told them, ‘Well, if I don’t move forward, I will die.’”
“Since you achieved that peace, do you ever go back and think how things could’ve been different?”
“No, no! I never go back. That is gone. It’s behind me. The future is ahead. Every day I wake up and I’m alive. I’m 65, almost 66. How much time do I have left? I don’t want to worry about the past.”
“It almost sounds like that terrible accident helped you to become a better, more positive person. You had a very peaceful expression on your face when I saw you. ”
“That’s right, that’s right! I’m happy. Why worry? If you have anger inside, it hurts your heart, and you can’t sleep. I have friends who have money, but they’re always worried. Some people think that they need too much—big house, big car, big everything, more and more, and upper and upper. And they never stop. Then they get sick and they’re upset. I know people who are lawyers, accountants, engineers, they have have master’s degrees and doctorates, and when I see them and say ‘Hi, how are you?’ they seem sad or upset. And they say, ‘Steven, how come you’re happy?’ Or I go to see some of them and they have passed away—heart attack, stroke, stress. You have no time to cool yourself down. You need to cool down and figure out who you are and what you are doing.
You know, in many beliefs they think that when you pass away, you go to heaven. But why wait till you pass away?  I want to enjoy my life right now, in the real world, and be happy. Heaven is a question mark.”
